News from Mrs. Gauen’s Kindergarten

Oct. 11, 2019

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to join us on our trip to the apple orchard on Wednesday. Although the PTA is paying for the trip for the students, we are asking for chaperones to pay  the $6.00 fee for the trip. Each chaperone will also be able to pick a bag of apples. We will leave immediately after announcements in the morning and will return in time for lunch. Please check the weather forecast and dress for the weather. We will be outside for most of the trip.

School will be dismissed at 2:00 on Tuesday Oct. 15th because of the Democratic debate being held at Otterbein University. The City of Westerville anticipates increased traffic and road closures so they want to get students home early. Friday is a work day for teachers but there are no classes for students.

It’s hard to believe we are midway through October! It seems like just yesterday that I was welcoming your child to kindergarten. They have learned so much already and I look forward to sharing their progress with you on Oct. 23rd or 24th.  Remember there will not be any classes on Oct. 24th or 25th. I will be giving you a paper copy at our conference. At the conference I will give you copies of some of the assessments I have done. If you want paper copies of future Achievement Records you may request one and the office will print one. Otherwise you will need to access it online after this initial conference.

Next week we will read a delightful story called The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything. We will do a series of activities

including sequencing the story and using picture cards to fill in missing letters on a word frame.

Thank you to everyone who has been helping your child learn all the letters and letter sounds and practicing the sight words. Next week ay your child will bring home a Book in the Bag. It is a plastic bag with word cards and letter cards. (Thank you to our wonderful volunteers for assembling the bags.) There is a log inside the bag for you to record each time your child practices the letter cards, word cards or reads the book in the bag. Please only record the books sent in the bag. Our goal is that each child will know all of the letters and sounds and be able to recognize, and later spell and write, the sight words on the ring. Many of the children have shown significant growth since school began. Also, please help your child remember to share their shoebox books with you and then return them to their shoebox for future reading.

In addition to working on our reading skills, the children have been practicing identifying and writing numerals 0-12 in their harvest books. These will be coming home at the end of the month. When it comes home in a few weeks, ask your child to share the book with you and sing our harvest song!!!

Have a great weekend,

Kathy Gauen
