Demolition began this week at Central College Elementary School.

Bulldozers, this week, started knocking down the walls of Central College Elementary School, but they will never be able to destroy fond memories held by employees who worked there and students who attended school there.

Central College, located at 825 South Sunbury Road, was built by Blendon Township in 1923.  The original building had six rooms.  In 1953, an addition added other classrooms, a cafeteria/auditorium and offices.  The school became part of the Westerville system on April 5, 1955, when Blendon Township Trustees surrendered control of the building.  It closed following the 2011-2012 school year, when the Westerville City School District determined it was no longer fiscally responsible to continue supporting the structure.  In recent years, the Child Development Council of Franklin County Inc. used the facility as a Head-Start preschool location.  Westerville Schools will hold onto the property for potential future use, though what that use may entail has not been determined.
