Cherrington students enjoyed playing a nine-hole round of disc golf on a course that was set up around their school.
On Friday, April 28, members of the Columbus Flyers Disc Golf Club and Mood Golf (Mid-Ohio Organized Disc Golf) visited Cherrington Elementary School to work with 4th and 5th grade students on the game of disc golf. The children learned about the history of disc golf, rules and etiquette, and throwing skills. After the pupils practiced, they played a nine-hole course that was set up around the school grounds and ended the day with a “Ring of Fire” throw off (where all students circle around one disc golf pole and, on command, everyone throws their disc at the same time, trying to make it into that one pole).
The club surprised the students by giving each a disc to take home, provided by Mood Golf and Innova Disc Golf.
To show their gratitude to the Flyers and Mood Golf for working with the youngsters, the Cherrington PTA, Physical Education and Health teacher Dustin Lee, and the 4th and 5th grade pupils donated $200 to the Columbus Flyers to help support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Central Ohio. The Flyers, for the past 20 years, have hosted The Brent Hambrick Memorial Tournament, at the Blendon Woods Disc Golf Course, to honor their friend who lost a battle with Leukemia 20 years ago. This event has raised more than $74,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
