Zach Wilkerson is surrounded by adoring students, who were in on the surprise.

Media Specialist Zach Wilkerson was surprised on May 6 when a group of Sunrise Rotarians showed up at Westerville North High School to present him with the Diane J. Conley Rotary Club of Westerville Sunrise Service to Youth award.  He received a plaque from the club, along with a cake and a gift card donated by the Walmart Supercenter on Schrock Road.  In addition, an American flag will be flown in his honor during Westerville’s Field of Heroes display.  Wilkerson and other Service to Youth award winners will be honored at a breakfast in May.

The Sunrise Rotarians said Wilkerson has devoted his career to the service of his students and has earned the respect and admiration of parents, pupils and colleagues.  As a mentor, collaborator and advisor, he brings depth, initiative, creativity and dedication to every period of every day.  People know they matter to him, whether a student searching for the perfect book, a colleague wanting to collaborate on a lesson, or an administrator needing assistance with technology.  A tireless advocate for all students, Wilkerson believes in the value of each student.  He helps them build upon strengths, overcome weaknesses and celebrate triumphs.  As Mock Trial advisor, Westerville North won its first State Championship and is advancing to the national competition.  The Rotarians concluded, “A man of rare intellect, compassion and commitment, Zach is a gifted educator who is absolutely dedicated to the well-being and happiness of his students.”

Rotary Sunrise instituted Service to Youth awards four years ago to recognize exceptional school employees who have made a special contribution to youth; have served as a positive role model for young people; and have demonstrated service above and beyond the call of duty in performing their job responsibilities.  The award is named in honor of Sunrise Rotarian Diane Conley, retired Chief of Academic Affairs for Westerville City Schools.
