Westerville North High School senior and journalism student Harrison Nickels has been notified that he is a winner in The Martys, an editorial contest for Central Ohio’s high school journalists.  He placed second in the “Best News Writing” category for an article he wrote entitled, “Excel in admissions with Common App.”  Nickels, taught by journalism teacher Maryann Hines, is The Odyssey’s Podcast editor.

This annual contest, now in its fifth year, honors the late Martin L. Rozenman, former longtime editor of Suburban News Publications, reporter for The Columbus Dispatch and nine-year board of directors member of the Central Ohio Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).  Mentoring students and reaching out to young journalists to encourage their interest in the profession was a hallmark of Rozenman’s career.

Nickels’ award and all 2015 winners in The Martys contest will be featured in an April 16/April 19 article in ThisWeek’s 24 community newspapers in Central Ohio.  His story also will be posted on ThisWeek’s website, www.ThisWeekNEWS.com, and the Central Ohio SPJ site, www.centralohiospj.org.

Joe Meyer, Managing Editor/News, ThisWeek Community News, said, “Entries were up, the quality was excellent across the board, and the judging was extremely tough in this year’s contest.  North’s entries were very strong contenders in just about every category.”
