Competing in the Continental Mathematics League Contest has become an annual tradition for many middle school pupils in the Westerville City School District.  Sixth grade students in advanced math and/or pre-algebra classes are given the opportunity to participate in this national math competition, where problem solving, mathematical, and reading skills are celebrated and improved upon.  This year Westerville students competed in the Pythagorian Contest Division. The Gifted Education Department facilitated the local contest, which consisted of five meets where youngsters had 30 minutes to complete six multi-step problems.   Top scoring students from each middle school were:

  • Blendon – sixth graders Zeke Bednarnuk (top scorer), Kyle Daniels, and Anthony Vilardo, all in pre-algebra;
  • Genoa – math 6 students Ava Stauffer (recognized nationally), Abby Urian, Madelyn McConnell, Timothy Haller, and Griffin Das;
  • Heritage – advanced math 6 students Keyton Kowalski, Deja Onyedumekwui, Brandon Lam, Jonathan Pratt, and Danielle Pratt; and
  • Walnut Springs – sixth graders Noah Polak, top scorer for pre-algebra and overall, and Paul Buckley, top score for advanced math 6.
