To kick off an Olympic unit in Physical Education, students at Hawthorne Elementary School wrote friendly letters to 100 athletes who competed in the Sochi winter games. So far, 61 responses have been received from 21 athletes.
The project made the Olympics come to life for the children, who were excited about making a personal connection with the athletes.
Under the direction of Physical Education teacher Alisa Franklin, Hawthorne even held its own Olympics in gym class, where pupils were introduced to Bobsled, Luge, Skeleton, and Curling. Franklin said the activity was a great way to incorporate letter writing and language arts into physical education.
