Students, staff and the PTSA at Walnut Springs Middle School have spent the last few weeks supporting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which helps to conquer childhood cancers by funding research projects. On March 15, at Fado’s Irish Pub in Easton Town Center, Assistant Principal Becca Yanni joined dozens of others by getting her head shaved in public as part of a fundraising effort called “Be the Answer for Kids with Cancer.”

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation website says all types of childhood cancer “receive only 4 percent of federal funding for cancer research.”To fill that gap, the foundation urges school groups and organizations to raise money for childhood cancer research and to challenge others to participate in head-shaving events, to show solidarity for children who lose their hair during cancer treatment.Walnut Springs shattered its goal of raising $1,000 by coming up with more than $2,500 for the cause.
