Rotary Club Names December Students of the Month

The Rotary Club of Westerville, which sponsors a Student of the Month program, recognized recipients at a luncheon at Villa Milano held on December 6. December students are: Dania Hamoui, Westerville Central High School; Jacob Dumford, Westerville North; Trista Diersing, Westerville South; and Simon Cain, St. Francis DeSales.

The purpose of the program is twofold: to recognize outstanding students who have distinguished themselves by serving their school and to expose them to the Rotary Club and its ideal of “Service Above Self.” Students selected join Rotarians for lunch every week for a month, and have the opportunity to interact with members.

Dania Hamoui, a senior at Westerville Central, holds a 3.46 grade point average. Film, Literature and Psychology are her favorite subjects of study. She runs cross country, is a member of the Vegetarian Club, and is president of the Interact Club. She babysits and is employed part-time by Coldstone Creamery. Hamoui is a Rotary Youth Leadership Award recipient, a cross country scholar athlete, a Westerville Central Student of the Month, and an Atlas Butler Student of the Month. She plans to study Psychology or Sociology at the University of Akron or Otterbein University.

Jacob Dumford, a senior at Westerville North, earned a 4.39 grade point average. Math is his favorite subject. Dumford lists track, cross country, swimming, Junior Mentoring, National Honor Society, and Young Life has his areas of involvement. He also tutors a Spanish child, is a VISS leader, and helps at the Central College Food Pantry. Dumford was the Motorists Insurance Athlete of the Week, the Agonis Club Athlete of the Month, and the Central District Runner of the Year. In the Division I State Meet held on November 3, Dumford finished second in cross country and propelled Westerville North to a fourth place finish overall. Next year he will study Engineering and Business at Notre Dame.

Trista Diersing is a junior at Westerville South. She holds a 3.6 grade point average and lettered in varsity lacrosse two years in a row. She is active in the field of sports medicine, and works two part-time jobs outside of school. She participated in Service Day. Diersing was recognized by South as at Cat with Class. She plans to major in Business at High Point University.

Simon Cain is a senior at St. Francis DeSales, where he holds a 3.769 grade point average. Math, Science and Construction Tech are his favorite subjects. He is a member of the History Club and the Engineering Club. He participated in an Oral History Project for his Parish, St. Paul’s, and has volunteered for the My Very Own Blanket organization. Cain will continue his education at Ohio University, where he plans to major in Mechanical Engineering.
