Drivers traveling through neighborhoods surrounding Robert Frost Elementary School on Wednesday, October 9, might have noticed much more pedestrian traffic than usual.  That’s because students and their families were participating in National Walk to School Day.  The Robert Frost Wellness Committee challenged pupils to create “walking school buses,” citing six reasons to walk: It’s a good way to start your day; you don’t have to listen to your mom or dad singing to the radio; it’s good for the environment; you can have your pup walk to school with you; it’s good for your body; and it’s fun!  Hundreds took part as parent volunteers led the walkers to school on the crisp, picture-perfect fall morning.

The Partnership for a Walkable America sponsored the first National Walk Our Children to School Day in Chicago in 1997, modeled after the United Kingdom’s walk to school events, and  communities around the United States have been celebrating Walk to School Day ever since.
