Carol Loopstra, from the Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District, talked with Huber Ridge third grade students about what can be found underground.

Third grade students at Huber Ridge Elementary School recently found themselves “surrounded” by soil, thanks to a program presented by the Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District and sponsored by the City of Westerville.  Carol Loopstra visited the school on January 14, pitching a huge, painted canvas tent in the hallway to help tell the story of soil below the surface.  This “soil tunnel” depicts soil layers, plant roots, and animals that live underground.  Students learned about soil, its composition, textures, and properties.  Loopstra also spoke about erosion and the importance of only rain going down the drain.

The mission of the Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District is to promote responsible land use decisions for the conservation, protection and improvement of soil and water resources by providing information assistance through effective partnering, technical guidance and education.
