A team of nurses from Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital visited students at Huber Ridge Elementary School last month to teach third, fourth and fifth graders about signs of stroke. They learned about what to look for and when it’s appropriate to call 911. The nurses conducted several hands-on experiments in the gymnasium, and the children were given literature to take home from the National Stroke Association, along with brain models for their classrooms. Pupils learned that stroke symptoms include sudden:
- Numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body;
- Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding;
- Trouble seeing in one or both eyes;
- Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; and
- Severe headache with no known cause.
