Getting bullied in school can cause a range of emotions for students from being slightly annoyed to being paralyzed with fear. Award-winning therapist Jim Bisenius came to Huber Ridge Elementary School on September 6 to present “Bully-Proofing Youth,” a practical and effective bullying prevention program designed for children in grades 1-12. It teaches students what kids who target look for in those they pick on and how to stop giving those reactions. Bisenius’ presentation was entertaining and interactive. He used humor, drawings, storytelling, and role-playing to teach students how to “starve” bullying behaviors.

Bisenius has 16 years of experience as a child and adolescent therapist specializing in teaching extremely targeted youth how to handle bullying situations. He has developed response techniques that have been recognized nationally as extremely effective at stopping the dance between children who bully and the ones they target. He has taught his methods in more than 450 schools nationally.
Bisenius earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Miami University and his Master’s Degree from The Ohio State University. He received a “Child Advocate of the Year” award from the Knox County Community, as well as a “Violence Prevention Award” from the Licking County Mental Health Association. His visit to Huber Ridge was made possible through funding provided by the Huber Ridge PTA and a Bette Marschall grant.
