Westerville South Theatre Troupe 513 has resumed a holiday tradition that had been on hiatus because of the pandemic: its traveling show to Westerville elementaries.

Every day this week, troupe members visited elementary buildings for a 30-minute live performance designed to introduce theater to younger students and help high school students understand how to perform for children.

“The energy, the execution, the performance is always so different from parents or peers,” WSHS theater director Matt Wolfe said.

This year marks the ninth year WSHS has hosted a traveling show. Last year, students visited one school and the production during the previous school year was recorded so students could watch in their classrooms.

During this tour, WSHS performed the play, “A Simple Task,” at five sites: Mark Twain, Robert Frost, Annehurst, Wilder and Cherrington.

“I want to show them that theater is fun,” said junior Rylee Jennings, who serves as the director for the traveling show.

“It’s about introducing kids to theater, showing them what it’s like and what they can do in the future.”
