The aroma of baking bread could be enjoyed in kitchens throughout the Westerville City School District this week, thanks to the efforts of fourth and fifth grade students who participated in the King Arthur Life Skills Bread Program. Pupils at Huber Ridge, McVay, Robert Frost, Cherrington and Mark Twain elementary schools watched a cooking demonstration by Paula Gray, manager of the program. She flew in from Vermont to teach the children how to make bread. The King Arthur Bread Company supplied each student with all the necessary supplies to bake two loaves at their homes. They were allowed to share one loaf with their family and were asked to give the other to a friend or neighbor of their choosing. Each child who donated bread was given a certificate. When the project was finished, the students handed in notes saying who they gave their bread to and why. Recipients were chosen, they wrote, for a variety of thoughtful reasons including:
  • “They have very little money;”
  • “She’s a cancer survivor and lives by herself;”
  • “They take care of her mom and don’t always have time to make food;” and
  • “She lives alone and is elderly.”
