Butterfly Project Empowers Young Women at Westerville North

The Butterfly Project was brought to Westerville North High School for all female students on January 9 and 10. It was facilitated by four pupils who had a vision to show every girl that she is valuable, lovable, capable and beautiful. Jayne Sterricker, Caroline O’Connor, Micayla Wilson, and Meghan Robbins created an assembly centered on self-esteem and the concerning issues that young women face in society. The goal of the program was to empower the attendees to make a change in the way they view themselves and each other.

A series of assemblies took place by grade level. Guest speaker Amy Buchan (pictured) talked with each group about her own personal struggles while going through high school, and gave advice on how to face issues today. Following her speech, a powerful video featuring History teacher Sean Ring was shown. He spoke about the challenges his family went through when he was a teenager. At the conclusion of the film, the girls participated in various activities and discussed how words and actions can impact lives forever.

Thirty-One Gives donated a wristlet to those who participated in the Butterfly Project, and each girl also received a free t-shirt. The final message to the young ladies at Westerville North was to think of what a difference everyone could make if they would stop changing the way they look, and start changing the way they see.
