In an era of growing pressure on schools to be accountable for higher test scores, Kurt Yancey, Principal of Westerville North High School, is taking steps to help students achieve higher standardized college entrance test scores. North recently partnered with Test Prep Seminars, a Wisconsin-based company, to help a broad range of its students prepare for the ACT test.

Last Monday, 183 students participated in an all-day workshop designed to provide students with specific strategies for the ACT as well as general test-taking and time-management skills applicable to a variety of exams. In doing so, Westerville North became the sixth Central Ohio high school to host such a session.

North has three goals in mind: to help students reach their full potential on this critical test; to increase the probability for each student to gain access to the college of their choice; and to increase the number of college scholarships made available to Westerville North students. “Our students deserve the best opportunities possible. Test Prep Seminars is one way to make a huge difference,” said Yancey.

Participating students agree that the program prepared them significantly for the ACT, which is taken by more than 1.5 million students across the nation annually. 93% of the Westerville North students rated the six-hour seminar an “A”.

College entrance exam scores are one of the top three factors for evaluating students for admissions and scholarships. Because of this, it is critical that as many students as possible be exposed to test-taking and time-management strategies.
