Dear WCSD Families:
As a result of a conversation yesterday among area superintendents and health officials from several organizations, our district’s executive leadership team has determined that the Westerville City Schools should open the 2020-21 Academic Year under a 100% remote learning model and not the blended learning model originally recommended. We will remain ready to transition immediately to a blended learning model at any time, but only when identified data leading to this decision shows the improvement recommended by these same health officials.
We realize this is not the news some of our families hoped to hear. However, several factors have prompted our decision. Though there was a recent short-term improvement to some key data being monitored, according to Franklin County Public Health and Columbus Public Health, the confirmed rate of COVID-19 cases in our region over the last four to six weeks, as well as the ratio of daily cases compared to the total population, continue to trend upward and remain concerning to them.
The recommendation from Franklin County Public Health and Columbus Public Health officials is that schools should not reopen under any model that provides in-person instruction, but instead should open under a remote learning model. Health officials said that schools could consider offering blended learning with in-person instruction only when there is at least a sustained positive trend in the data they are monitoring, and only if the county is also at a Level 3 or better on the state’s Public Health Advisory Alert System.

(July 29, 2020) Westerville City School District to transition to 100% virtual instruction for start of 2020-21 school year. Read the complete announcement here.
Good day, Heritage MS Families,
I hope this message finds you doing well and staying cool during these hot July days! The entire HMS staff is eager to start the 2020-2021 school year, so we can continue our #HuskyStrong journey together. Please read the critical back-to-school information below and let me know if you have any questions, concerns, ideas, etc. by reaching out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling our main office number at 614-797-6600.
Back to School Events:
In lieu of a face-to-face back to school event, all district middle schools--including Heritage-- will be providing critical back-to-school details for all families through a letter which will be mailed home by early August. This letter will include the following information:
Each family's specific PowerSchool and Schoology login information;
Instructions about how to access their student's schedule; and
Details about signing up for an optional Virtual PowerSchool and Schoology support session for parents/guardians that will review how to access and understand those programs, update PowerSchool information, pay fees, read a student's schedule, and more.
Curriculum Night will also be done as a virtual event this year; more details about this event will be available from each school soon.
The First Days of School:
The first day that students will begin attending classes and receiving instruction according to an alternating “A Week/B Week” schedule is Monday, August 24. However, all students will be required to participate in online Remote Learning Days on August 20 and August 21. For those two days, students will receive important details about the upcoming school year, what to expect during blended learning, and how to get support when needed. There will not be a gentle start for preschool or kindergarten students this year, and there will not be a “sixth-grade only day” for the first day of instruction at the middle school level.
Under the alternating “A Week/B Week” schedule, half of our students will begin attending school in person on Monday, August 24, while the other half is on remote instruction for the week. Students will continue to follow the alternating “A Week/B Week” schedule moving forward.
Again, please feel free to reach out to me or any administrator if you have questions, concerns, ideas, etc.
And please visit my July Virtual Office anytime for the latest news and information for all Huskies!
Keep your eyes on the prize and seize every day with kindness, excellence, safety and Husky PRIDE!
