Genoa Middle School students will get their first look at the newest addition to their school community on Monday.

Rocky, the first-ever therapy dog with the Genoa Township Police Department, joins his handler, School Resource Officer Jason Berner, administrators and staff to welcome students to the building during morning arrival. He will be dedicated to Genoa, supporting and offering comfort to students and staff during the school day.

“We’re excited,” Principal Scott Gaddis said. “It’s going to be great for staff. It’s going to be a great asset to our kids.”

Rocky is a one-year-old English Labrador Retriever who has been trained by Berner since the dog was 8-weeks-old. Rocky has been certified in multiple trainings in preparation for his role including obedience and therapy dog training. He is a member of the statewide law enforcement therapy dog team.

Genoa Township Police has developed a K-9 unit over the years where dogs have been trained in patrol functions, building searches, criminal apprehension, and drug detection. Chief Stephen Gammill decided to add a therapy dog to the K-9 Program in an effort to enhance the department’s connection with the schools and community.

Berner has been a K-9 handler for 16 years and previously led two of the police department’s patrol dogs. He is looking forward to introducing Rocky to Genoa students and staff.

“Anything that can bridge the gap between youth and law enforcement is great,” he said.

Rocky has been preparing for his first day at school, touring the space and getting acclimated to the bells while students were out of the building. In addition to morning arrivals, he will be on hand during class changes in the hallways and afternoon dismissal. Gaddis and Berner will work with teachers and staff to coordinate class visits and support students’ needs while making sure they feel comfortable and safe.
