Westerville North High School alum Sophia Soisson is leaving their mark in the district — one mural at a time.

Since graduating last spring, Soisson has been working with middle school leaders on mural projects in their buildings.

In August, they completed a mural designed to represent the diversity at Walnut Springs as well as in the world. Their finished project: hands of various skin tones wrapped around the world with the school’s mascot, a wolf, howling in the background.

Last month, they finished a piece for Blendon, which was inspired by Corey Pane’s mural that honors Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders in Downtown Hartford in Connecticut.

They are working with administrators at Genoa and Heritage middle schools about painting murals on their school walls as well.

“I’m glad I got the opportunity to make these murals for the schools because it’s my way of giving back to the community,” said Soisson, who will graduate from Columbus State this spring. They plan to attend Columbus College of Art and Design in the fall.

They hope students, staff members and anyone who encounters the murals find joy and community with the display.

“The main thing I want them to take away from these murals is that they are not alone,” they said. “There are so many people out there that are willing to help others and give you comfort.”
