Lisa Lunn, a sixth-grade social studies teacher at Genoa Middle School, is among five Ohio educators selected for a national professional development webinar series sponsored by National History Day this spring.

The Historical Argumentation webinar series features resources from the Library of Congress and connects educators with an expert historian. Through the series, teachers will develop strategies to help their students think like a historian and develop a solid historical argument. The learning modules support NHD’s 2022 theme, “Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences.”

“The teachers who participate in Historical Argumentation are all dedicated to teaching students about the nuances of creating a sound claim backed by evidence,” said National History Day Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. “The skills of discerning evidence, understanding historical resources, and being able to make sound arguments benefit students throughout their academic and professional careers.”

There are 120 teachers enrolled for the spring 2022 course. Upon completing the series, the teachers will have demonstrated they can use Library of Congress resources to map out a model historical argument. Participants earn professional development credits upon course completion.

The course is made possible by generous funding provided by the Library of Congress and the 400 Years of African American History Commission.
