To celebrate Westerville South High School’s upcoming production of The Outsiders, WSHS Theatre Troupe 513 is inviting all middle and high school students to share an artistic response inspired by the characters and plot points of the play.
“Because the novel is so universally known, we want to include the larger community with our event and get them thinking about the timeless themes about friendship, isolation, and family,” WSHS Theatre Director Matt Wolfe said.
Students can answer the following prompts with a written response (800 words or less), poem, play, painting, drawing or any kind of creative response:

What is the thing in your life that makes you “stay gold?”

When telling the story of your life, where would you begin and why? What would the first sentence be? (For example, when Ponyboy tells his story, he begins by saying, “I wish I looked like Paul Newman. He looks tough and I don’t.”)

Have you ever been in a situation you didn’t know how to get out of? How did you manage to “stay gold”?

Have you ever judged someone without knowing them? Have you ever been judged by someone without them knowing you?
Wolfe said the theatre troupe would like to share the responses on its website and plan to award tickets to the winners. More information is available here.
