The One Westerville MLK Basketball Classic features four games with Westerville North and Westerville South teams, starting at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at Westerville North.

Admission proceeds will go toward the “One Westerville” scholarship fund.

Two Westerville 2020 graduates — Ameena Freeman of WNHS and Tah’bre Yemi of WSHS — created the One Westerville Scholarship Fund in response to the racial justice protests over the summer following the death of George Floyd. A scholarship fund, they said, offered a way to support the black community in Westerville.

They worked with other Westerville graduates and district staff to launch the fund, creating a committee to set the criteria for the scholarship and raising money to provide a $1,500 scholarship for a recipient at each of the district’s high schools. The group awarded scholarships to their first recipients last year.

The event schedule includes:

  • 1:30 p.m.: Westerville South vs. Harvest Prep (Girls)

  • 3:35 p.m.: Westerville South vs. Dublin Jerome (Boys)

  • 5 p.m.: Westerville North vs. DeSales (Girls)

  • 6:45 p.m.: Westerville North vs. DeSales (Boys)
