Battle of the Books: Westerville South earns four consecutive win, middle school teams compete

Westerville South High School’s (WSHS) Battle of the Books team took top honors against 10 Central Ohio teams in the Ohio Capital Conference, winning the competition for the fourth consecutive year. 

As part of the annual event, high school teams are given 25 books to read throughout the school year before facing off in a question/answer competition against teams within their conference. The 2021 event for the Ohio Capital Conference was April 28 at Columbus Academy.

Senior Alia O’Brien, captain of WSHS’ Battle of the Books team, credits her teammates to their ongoing success. They are passionate about books, reading and testing their knowledge every week during practices.

“We work really well together,” she said. “It’s so fun, so competitive, so geeky and I love it.”

The members of the WSHS 2021 Battle of the Books Team are: O’Brien, Sam Davenport, Eden Dempsey-Boeshart, Simone Gorman, Dahlia Mahmoud, Nabiha Mohamud, Daniel Murray, Emmanuel Okyere and Kaitlin Reynolds.

At the middle-school level, sixth- and seventh-grade Genoa Middle School students in advanced English Language Arts classes with teachers Tracy Jados, Shannan McCreary and Kara Reiter as well as sixth-grade Heritage Middle School students in advanced English Language Arts classes with teachers Mary Schade and Kellie Sheely, participated in Battle of the Books competitions at their buildings. Their competitions were facilitated by the Westerville Gifted Education Department.
