The Westerville City Schools Board of Education approved another organizational move to meet the district’s succession planning needs at its May 10 board meeting.

Steve McElroy has been named the new director of Safety & Security, assuming some of the responsibilities of Debbie Meissner, director of Health and Safety, whose retirement is effective July 31. (Tami Santa’s existing position was expanded to incorporate the health and wellness-related responsibilities of Meissner’s position and her title became director of Mental Health & Wellness in February.)

McElroy joins the district after nearly 16 years at Columbus City Schools, where he most recently was the executive director of Business and Operations in the Office of Transportation. While at Columbus, he has also served as director of Safety and Security in Columbus where he procured and managed millions of dollars in grant and budget funds to enhance safety and security initiatives, such as Emergency Response Crisis Management. He has been a subject matter expert to the U.S. Department of Education since 2009.

McElroy is a former police officer and detective, as well as a former airman with the Ohio Air National Guard. He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in business administration from Ohio Dominican University.

He said he was drawn to the district’s supportive community, its phenomenal students and staff and its values. His goal in his new role: to develop a collaborative and inclusive plan to ensure that all students and staff feel safe while attending Westerville City Schools.
