Genoa Middle School students among national winners in Continental Math League Contest

Westerville sixth-grade students in advanced math classes competed in the 2020-21 Continental Mathematics League Contest with the Genoa Middle School team taking the top spot as the Pythagorean Division Grade 6 national winners.

The competition, which was facilitated through the Gifted Education Department in conjunction with advanced math teachers, tests students’ problem solving, analytical reasoning, mathematical computation, and reading skills. The students competed in the Pythagorean Division with five meets, in which students had 30 minutes to complete six multi-step problems.  

Top-scoring sixth-grade students include:

  • Genoa Middle School: Mason Phifer (first place), Evan Varekojis (second place), Sean House and Eli Friedman (tied for third place), Ella Myers (fourth place), and Jude Thayer (fifth place). (teachers: Pam Charleston and Jamie Yeater).

  • Walnut Springs Middle School: Russel Craiglow (first place); Kamden Hibbit (second place); Matthew Fouse (third place), Gianna Harvey (fourth place), and Charlotte Maurer and Breanna Kappes (tied for fifth place). (teachers: Maggie Etherington, Maria Soisson, Kimberly Thayer)
