Genoa Middle School science teacher Tina Bardwell wanted to ease her students in their first week together with a friendly competition.

“I wanted them to have some fun with their friends,” she said.

For four days, students reviewed concepts covered so far this year in the different Science units through different trivia-style competitions.

Students earned points — and in some cases received prizes for their answers — each day. The top-point getters for the week received a pizza party, which was provided by the school’s PTA. A parent also donated various items for one of the prize bins for students.

Bardwell kicked off the festivities by greeting students with a balloon drop as they entered her classroom. (They were invited to take a balloon, rub it on their hair to build friction so it could stick it to the wall. Then they had to explain the science behind the static electricity that causes the balloon to stick to the wall.)

The week culminated with a test to show what they remembered from the Streams, Glaciers, and Topography unit.
