The Westerville Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW; http://www.aauw.org), in cooperation with the Westerville City Schools Gifted Education Department, has awarded four $300 scholarships to the Be WISE Camp at Denison University this summer.  Recipients of the scholarships are Ruthie Curry, grade 6, Blendon Middle School; Kendel Seabury, grade 6, Genoa Middle School; Jenny Courts, grade 7, Heritage Middle School; and Erica Fite, grade 6, Walnut Springs Middle School.

Founded in 1881 and with nearly 1,000 branches across the country, AAUW is a national organization promoting equity and education for women and girls.  AAUW President and retired math teacher Miriam Holmes met with the recipients and family members on May 7, who attended an informational meeting and reception.  Former camp scholarship recipient Madison Seabury from Genoa shared her camp experiences as well.

Be WISE is a mathematics, science and technology camp for girls entering grades 7 or 8 in the fall of 2014.  It features a separate curriculum for each grade level emphasizing hands-on activities in math and science.  This summer is the camp’s 25th anniversary.  More than 3,000 girls have participated.  This residential camp for 130 young women will be held this year from June 15 - 20.  For further information, please visit http://www.bewisecamp.org
