In support of the Westerville City School District’s mission “to prepare students to contribute to the competitive and changing world in which we live,” a special evening of small group sessions, literature tables, and networking discussions took place at Walnut Springs Middle School on February 26.  The event was deemed a success with more than 100 families in attendance.  Ten sessions were offered and families could attend two.  Between workshops, literature from some 50 institutions of higher education was available.

Speakers came from within the school such as Athletics and College, presented by athletic director and physical education teacher Stuart Gartrell; 21st Century Skills for High School and Beyond, presented by media specialist Jean Trimble, and Ohio Career Center Information System, presented by Walnut Springs guidance counselors.

Presenters also came from other schools the district, including High School Graduation Requirement by Westerville North High School guidance counselor Julie Taylor; Advanced Placement in High School, offered by Westerville North Advanced Placement teacher Leslie Baumann; and International Baccalaureate (IB) Updates, by IB Coordinator and Westerville South High School Assistant Principal Michael Hinze.

Community presenters included:

  • Advocating for your IEP or 504 Student Through College, by Brian Dixon from the Office of Disability Services at Columbus State Community College;
  • Career Center Options, by Delaware Career Center North Campus Director Stephen Fuji; and
  • Preparing for College Now, by Debbie Crumrine, a local business owner of Class 101.

Also, coming in from Chicago, was Dr. Eric Calvert, the Outreach, Research, and Technology Coordinator from Northwestern University Center for Talent Development, who discussed ACT/SAT Prep and Beyond.

The Walnut Springs College and Career Readiness Committees is processing evaluations from the activity and looks forward to hosting future events.
