Football games that pitted teams from Genoa Middle School against New Albany took on special meaning Thursday evening, September 4, because those matches were tied in with Tackling Childhood Cancer activities that took place at Genoa all week long. The event was organized by Genoa football coach Eric Nickel in memory of Mason Woods, who was a third grade student at Fouse Elementary School when he passed away on February 3, 2009, after a 6-year battle with leukemia. He would have been an eighth grader at Genoa this year.
Genoa students participated in a number of activities throughout the week to raise funds for the Mason Woods Charitable Foundation, which supports pediatric cancer patients and their families in the Columbus area. The organization provides families with gift cards for food and gas, and has also purchased many items for the Oncology floor (J5) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio including video gaming equipment, games, toys, crafts, and books.
