The Westerville City Schools High School Athletic Departments have partnered with mCORE - Mobile Cardiac Overview and Risk Evaluation - to make available screenings for student-athletes for the cardiac conditions and abnormalities which may put them at risk of Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD). SCD is the result of unsuspecting cardiological disease or abnormalities which cause the heart to stop without warning or symptoms. Several student-athletes each year are lost to this devastating tragedy, many of which could have been prevented with a simple examination like this.

Screening is fast and painless and includes an electrocardiogram (EKG) and an echocardiogram. An electrocardiogram maps rate, rhythm and function of the heart and prints a tracking for physician review and interpretation. The echocardiogram is an ultrasound image produced by an ultrasound probe across the chest.

Screenings will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Westerville Central on August 28; at Westerville South on September 11; and at Westerville North on September 19. The cost to families is $75 per athlete. Each screening should take approximately eight to ten minutes.

Athletes must pre-register at www.mcoreathletes.com. For further information, please call 972/955-0922 or visit the athletic department pages on the Westerville City School District website, www.wcsoh.org.
