August 15 marked the first day of school for some 15,000 students in the Westerville City School District. The early-morning fog lifted shortly after sunrise to make way for a bright and beautiful day to mark the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.

Speaking at an opening day assembly held at Westerville North High School, Dr. Dan Good, Superintendent of Schools, wished the students a “happy new year” and told them that when he graduated from high school in the 1970s, 75% of available jobs on the market required only a high school education. Now, he said, more than 75% of available jobs require a college degree. “So, in this 21st century competitive environment, post-secondary education and training is no longer just a good idea to secure employment; it’s the rule – a moral imperative – and one we take very seriously in Westerville City Schools.” He added that the district is fortunate to have some of the top professionals in the education industry, combined with facilities the community has graciously provided, along with highly capable students.

1999 Westerville North graduate Ryan Wilson spoke to the group from Los Angeles, via Skype. Wilson was a state champion in the high hurdles, low hurdles, and long jump. He also excelled in the classroom and was named Academic All-Ohio. He was a PAC10 champion at the University of Southern California and an NCAA Champion as well. He just missed qualifying for this year’s Olympics and runs professionally for Saucony, traveling all over the world. He noted the rigor of his high school training and its relevance, but equally important, he iterated the importance of respectful behaviors and supportive relationships that helped foster belief in himself and his unlimited potential.

Dr. Good and Principal Kurt Yancey concluded by wishing the students well and congratulating them and their parents.
