On Valentine’s Day, McVay Elementary School’s Art Academy took a field trip to the Wexner Center for the Arts to attend the Carmen Herrara and Sarah Oppenheimer exhibits.  Students were led through the galleries, taking in the magnitude of the show, which is only being held at the Wexner and at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.  Pupils learned about abstract art and got to interact with moving artworks.  They also heard about the historical plight of women artists who fought to have shows and sell their groundbreaking work like their male counterparts.  After the tour, the children laid on the gallery floor using the artworks around them to create their own abstract pieces through line, shape, and color.  They will be taking these sketches and making their own meaningful abstract paintings.
