Third grade students at Annehurst and Whittier elementary schools recently learned about the book Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortensen, which tells about his failed attempt to climb K2, the world’s second tallest mountain.  After he lost his way, a man from the tiny village of Korphe, Pakistan, found him, took him in, gave him tea, and nursed him back to health.  Children in that village didn’t even have a school to attend, so Mortensen vowed to return and build them one.  He created an organization called Pennies for Peace, and raised enough money to keep his promise.  Since that time, Pennies for Peace has grown into a program that encompasses thousands of participants around the world.  After hearing the story, Westerville students, under the direction of art teacher Heather Freado, painted their own three cups of tea.  Their artwork was displayed recently at Westerville’s Java Central, where donations were collected and sent to Pennies for Peace.
