Abby Shepherd, pictured with Annehurst Principal Howard Baum, was shocked when a group of employees from Office Max on State Street and Huber Ridge Boulevard surprised her with a new chair and a massive box filled with supplies for her classroom.

October 2 was a day to remember for Abby Shepherd, a teacher at Annehurst Elementary School. When her principal, Howard Baum, walked into her classroom with a group of employees from the Office Max on State St. and Huber Ridge Boulevard, she knew something was up. She was not prepared to be showered with gifts.

Baum secretly nominated Shepherd to be part of the OfficeMax Day Made Better Program. Since 2007, A Day Made Better and other OfficeMax Goodworks programs have contributed more than $18 million in grants and supplies to support more than 29,000 teachers and their classrooms. Additionally, through the annual event, OfficeMax has helped its nonprofit partner, AdoptAClassroom.org, secure funding for more than 78,000 classrooms nationwide.

Baum described Shepherd as a young teacher, yet poised and confident. “Abby is well liked by her students and respected by her colleagues throughout the building,” he wrote. “Abby does truly make a day better in the lives of our students when they step into her room. She is very deserving of this recognition.”
