Annehurst Principal Howard Baum conducts business from a tree outside the school.

Principal Howard Baum’s “new” office at Annehurst Elementary was the talk of the school on Monday, September 17. He built and installed a platform in a tree in back of the building over the weekend, took his laptop up there, and went to work. Food, water and supplies were transported via a bucket on a rope. It was all part of a Summer Reading Challenge. Baum asked his students to try and read, collectively, at least 125,000 pages during summer break. They responded by reading more than 134,000 pages. Many pupils were so fascinated that they asked for his autograph. The day was balmy, with low humidity, blue skies, bright sunshine, and a gentle breeze. Baum confessed that between the curious questions and perfect weather, he didn’t get a lot of work done.
