The Rotary Club of Westerville recognized its January 2023 Students of the Month during a Jan. 12 meeting. Throughout the school year, from October through May, the Club honors four students from local high schools each month. Working with the school principals and counselors, one student each month is chosen from Westerville Central, Westerville North, Westerville South and St. Francis DeSales high schools. The students, their parents, and the school administrators are introduced and honored at a Rotary Club luncheon each month.
January 2023 Honoree Profiles
Westerville Central: Asmaa Mohammad’s favorite subjects are Advanced Placement Calculus and anatomy. The senior is a member of Key Club and the National Honor Society. She supports the school’s Care Closet and serves as a blood donor ambassador. She has made the honor roll throughout high school. She is interested in attending Ohio State University. “I’m glad I was able to make an impact on my school and community through my volunteering these past couple of years.”
Westerville North: Dillon Hittle’s favorite subjects are history and government. The senior is involved in a variety of activities: Hope Squad, Warrior Athletic Leadership Team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Big Warrior Little Warrior mentoring program, School Newspaper and National Honor Society. He also competes on the school’s lacrosse team, serves as the school mascot and a student section leader and volunteers with the I Can program. He is a member of a youth group band and leadership team. He is a four-time varsity athlete and five-time scholar athlete. He was named the ALLN Spring Athlete of the Year in 2020. He is interested in attending Mount Vernon Nazarene University. “My main goal in life is to make as many people laugh and smile as possible!”
Westerville South: Trey Rutherford’s favorite subject is history. The senior is a member of National Honor Society and serves as a mentor for Blendon middle school students and a junior historian for the Catawba Tribe. He helped with the school’s Socktober fundraiser as well as with David Grimes’ campaign for Westerville City Council. He is a member of the football team and has received several awards and recognition including Cats with Class, academic letters and the school’s Departmental Excellence Award for Social Studies. He is interested in attending Oberlin College to study history.
St. Francis DeSales: Michael Hunsaker’s favorite subjects are history and physics. He is a CORE Student Ambassador, CORE member of the evangelization-team, an officer for DeSales's National Honors Society and captain on the boys volleyball team. He is part of the Diocese of Columbus’ CYO basketball team and a member of his church youth group. He is part of the St. Vincent DePaul club, Business club, engineering club and a member of the Spanish National Honors Society. He is currently working on a project of making a 3D model of the entire school to help the administration with future renovation plans. He has received the AP Scholar Award and has made the honor roll throughout high school. He plans to attend the United States Naval Academy to study engineering.
“The past two years during DeSales's annual canned food drive a friend and I have been able to be the top collectors. We went around several neighborhoods, passed out flyers, and then came back later to collect the donations. This year I was named a captain of the canned food drive and able to collect around 2,000 pounds of food to go to two food banks in the surrounding area.”
