Counselors across Westerville’s three high schools have ramped up their efforts to help the Class of 2023 navigate their next steps after they graduate in the spring — especially with the Nov. 1 early application deadline for many colleges approaching.

Earlier this month, Westerville South High School hosted a free college application workshop and college fair where students could connect with college reps from more than 20 institutions in the area, start or complete their application process and have their fee waived.

Westerville North High School counselors organized its first-ever Warrior on Their Way week-long event this week, where students could meet with college reps, complete their college applications and connect with workforce partners for resume help or mock interviews.

At Westerville Central High School, counselors have been meeting with students individually to support their college application needs ahead of the Nov. 1 deadline. For students who have yet to start the application process, counselors are planning a help session during the school’s extended Fly Time period next week.

Each high school has taken similar approaches to helping seniors since September: Lunch sessions for those who need help with college and career planning. Workshops for families on topics such as financial aid, FAFSA and college applications. Classroom visits to connect with students and share key dates and upcoming events.

To help support students with their post-high school plans, the district switched to a new college and career planning platform called SchooLinks this year. The tool helps students explore careers, search colleges, request teacher recommendations, complete college applications and more.

In addition to college application help, WNHS’ Warrior on Their Way event provided opportunities for students to explore other post-high school plans such as the workforce or the military. Counselors had information about local companies such as FedEx and Worthington Industries that are hiring high school graduates.

Students met with volunteers from the Westerville Area Chamber of Commerce, who conducted mock interviews and helped them craft or revise their resumes.
