Rotary Club of Westerville February 2022 Student of the Month

The Rotary Club of Westerville recognized its February 2022 Student of the Month during a Feb. 3 meeting. Throughout the school year, from October through May, the Club honors four students from local high schools each month. Working with the school principals and counselors, one student each month is chosen from Westerville Central, Westerville North, Westerville South and St. Francis DeSales high schools. The students, their parents, and the school administrators are introduced and honored at a Rotary Club luncheon each month.

February 2022 Honoree Profiles

Westerville Central: Sidney Choo’s favorite subjects are anatomy and physiology, government and English. The junior serves as a class officer and is a member of the varsity tennis team, Mock Trial, Key Club and Hope Squad. She is a scholar athlete and was recognized in the 4.0 and Above Honor Roll. She is interested in studying political science/public affairs and public health at The Ohio State University, Case Western University, University of Cincinnati, Boston University or George Washington University. 

Westerville North: Donovan Varney’s favorite subjects are journalism and math. The senior serves as a class officer, editor-in-chief of the school newspaper and a captain of the football team. He is a member of the Warrior Athletic Leadership Team and the National Honor Society. Among his honors and recognitions: OCC Scholar Athlete (football), 2nd Team All-OCC (football), Honorable Mention All-Central District (football), 2015 MLK Fouse Award winner and a seven-time Scholar Athlete. He is interested in studying journalism at The Ohio State University or Ohio University. 

Westerville South: Anna Deichert’s favorite subjects are American Sign Language, history and English. The senior serves as the Lieutenant Governor in the Ohio District of Key Club International and president of the school’s Key Club. She is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in the Global Scholars Diploma Program and orchestra. She is launching an American Sign Language Club at Blendon Middle School. Among her honors and recognitions: three-time soccer varsity letter, World Language Department Award, Cats with Class and Girls Soccer Wildcat Award. She will attend North Central University in Minneapolis to study either American Sign Language Interpreting or Student Ministry. “I'd like to thank the Rotary Club of Westerville for this honor and giving us an opportunity to share about ourselves and what we've accomplished!”

St. Francis DeSales: Vanna Giang’s favorite subjects are chemistry, government and calculus. The senior serves as the senior class president and secretary of the National Honor Society. She formed the Asian Pacific Islander Student Association to spread cultural awareness and celebrate the diversity in Asia and serves as a diversity leader at DeSales, having received professional training to learn about racial bias. She is a competitive dancer and is involved in the school’s Spanish National Honor Society, KPop club and the World Culture’s Assembly’s fashion and talent show. She has been in the honor roll for all 4 years of high school and has received scholarships for merit and history. She is interested in studying neuroscience at The Ohio State University or the University of Southern California. Giang is a first-generation Vietnamese American and the daughter of two refugee parents. “Thank you for seeing the potential in me and for your time.”
