Westerville Central High School’s Key Club has been named “Outstanding Youth Group” by the Delaware County Foundation during its Evening of Generosity on Oct. 20.

The foundation, whose mission is to strengthen communities by connecting people through charitable giving, recognized WCHS Key Club members for their volunteer efforts in the community, which include:

  • Raising money in support of the Trick or Treat program for Unicef

  • Holding a food drive to collect food donations to support the Westerville Area Resource Ministry (WARM)

  • Leading a fundraising and gift support drive for the Westerville Caring and Sharing program, which raises about $15,000 each year

  • Organizing a holiday decoration project for local nursing home residents

  • Making blankets in support of the My Very Own Blanket program that donates blankets to students in foster care

  • Crafting holiday cards for children in foster care

  • Volunteering for the Westerville Parks and Rec Pumpkin Glow event

WCHS’ Key Club also supports the Pennies for Patients program by organizing a school-wide donation drive. They’ve volunteered for several Genoa Township activities such as the Easter Egg Extravaganza and the Earth Day trash pickup project. Students have also volunteered to support Uptown Westerville’s Fourth Friday events and have collected peanut butter to donate to the Lifeline Christian Mission in support of an orphanage in Haiti.

“These teenagers exemplify the positive impact that youth can have on a community,” Delaware County Foundation leaders said.

Nearly 300 people attended the foundation’s ninth annual banquet, which also recognized community members and businesses for their philanthropy. The foundation provides grants to nonprofits and scholarships to students as it connects people who care to causes that matter.
