Three Westerville high school students who are members of Westerville Troop 1434 have been awarded the Silver Award, the second-highest award in the Girl Scouts.

Westerville South’s Cassidy Chakford, Westerville Central’s Evelyn Clark and Westerville North’s Kati Zonner were honored in a ceremony on May 17.

The Girl Scout Silver Award is awarded to troop members who complete a series of leadership challenges and a community service project at the end of eighth grade. (The deadline was extended because of the pandemic.) Only about 10 percent of Girl Scouts nationwide are awarded with the Silver Award.

For the students’ service project, they focused on raising community awareness on the diversity in Westerville. They built a website that includes data about the city’s demographics; images from across the city that showcase equality and inclusiveness and assignments for students across grade levels on topics such as race, women, LGBTQ+ and those with special needs.

They created different levels of a Girl Scout patch to be earned by other troops nationwide. The students plan to continue the project with plans for expansion.
