The Westerville Education Challenge (WEC) is sponsoring events this month focused on mental health awareness and raise money to support Hope Squad, a new peer-led initiative focused on suicide prevention/education coming to Westerville’s high schools next year.

  • As part of the Voices of Hope poetry slam, Westerville high school students are invited to submit poems reflecting hope by Dec. 14. Two winners will get to meet with Josh Dun, drummer of the Grammy award-winning duo Twenty One Pilots.

The event, which is sponsored by the WEC, the Arts Council of Westerville and Secret Midnight Press, will be hosted by authors and poets, Ashley Dun and Jesse Cale. Entries must reflect themes of hope and include a title, be 200 words or less and shall not exceed 3 and a half minutes in length when read.

Twelve finalists will be selected among the qualifying entries. Finalists will be notified and will receive prizes provided by Secret Midnight Press. For more information, visit the Arts Council of Westerville’s website.

  • WEC has partnered with Asterisk Supper Club, Cardinal Pizza and Ohio Pies for a pie fundraiser where proceeds will go towards funding the Hope Squad at the district’s three high schools. Those interested in buying a pie (with free delivery for those in Westerville Dec. 18 and Dec. 19) or donating can visit the WEC website.
