On Friday, April 24, 70 Westerville Central Physics students traveled to Newark, Ohio to participate in the 3rd annual Central Ohio Technical College Egg Drop Contest.  More than 350 students from Central Ohio took part in a simple challenge – to design a device to safely transport a standard large “grade A” egg and protect it from a fall of 22 feet using the fewest number of parts and having the lightest weight possible while accurately hitting a target. The mass, number of parts and “ring number” are all factored into an equation to determine the winner.

Sagar Patel and Nick Bundy took second place in the “senior group” category, while Ethan Hardiman won a design award.  The egg drop contest is a required quarter project for Central’s physics students, who have been asked all year to apply some simple engineering and design skills to basic challenges.  Students were also asked to create a presentation and write a research paper on the important physics concepts associated with the egg drop contest.
