Rotary Club of Westerville Names December Students of the Month

The Rotary Club of Westerville, which sponsors a Student of the Month program, recognized recipients at a luncheon at the Medallion Country Club held on December 12.  December students are:  Caroline Ogle, Westerville Central High School; Jacob Fowler, Westerville North High School; Sarah Leonard, Westerville South High School; and Ian Lawson, St. Francis DeSales High School.

The purpose of the program is twofold:  to recognize outstanding students who have distinguished themselves by serving their school and to expose them to the Rotary Club and its ideal of “Service Above Self.”  Students selected join Rotarians for lunch every week for a month, and have the opportunity to interact with members. 

Caroline Ogle, a senior at Westerville Central, holds a 3.7 grade point average.  Her favorite subjects of study are Life Sciences, including Zoology, Biology and Ecology.  She is active in theatre, Key Club, the National Honor Society, Invisible Children and the Vegetarian Club, and is passionate about music.  She volunteers at animal shelters, has helped with the Libraries for Liberia project, and assists with children’s activities sponsored by the City of Westerville.  Ogle is also a cross country runner and a scholar athlete.  She plans to attend The Ohio State University, where she would like to major in Zoology with an emphasis on the study of reptiles. 

Senior Jacob Fowler enjoys studying Science at Westerville North, where he holds a 4.0 grade point average.  He is varsity captain of the swim team, plays soccer, and is a member of the National Honor Society.  He is also an Eagle Scout.  He plans to study Pre-Medicine at Ohio State, Cincinnati, or Miami University.

Math, Science and English are favorite subjects of study for Westerville South junior Sarah Leonard, who holds a 4.665 grade point average.  This International Baccalaureate Programme diploma candidate plays in the orchestra and participates in In the Know.  She has earned numerous recognitions from a variety of places including the Piano Guild, the History Department, Westerville’s Got Talent, the Laws of Life, United Methodist Women, Reflections, Solo & Ensemble contests, and spelling bees.  She also co-founded Supporting the Girls, an organization dedicated to working with Ohio charities to raise self-esteem by providing bras for women and girls in need.  Leonard plans to study Neuroscience Oberlin College.

Ian Lawson is a 12th grade student at St. Francis DeSales High School.  His grade point average is 4.15.  He enjoys studying Math, Science and Business.  He is a member of the Business Club, the Math Club, and the Spanish Club.  He is also president of Student Council and an officer in the National Honor Society.  He plays soccer and is active in cross country and track.  He volunteers at Children’s Hospital.  Lawson organized a breast cancer drive and tutors underclassmen.  He won an Atlas Butler Service Award.  He plans to continue his studies at the University of Michigan or Ohio State.
