Two Westerville middle school students have moved on in the MathCounts competition, advancing to the Ohio State Competition on March 11 at Columbus State Community College.

Anna McCracken, a seventh-grader at Walnut Springs Middle School; and Mason Wu, an eighth-grader at Blendon Middle School were among the group of Westerville middle schoolers who competed at the Franklin County Chapter Competition earlier this month.

During that event, Wu competed in the individual competition. McCracken was part of the Walnut Springs MathCounts team that included eighth-graders Russell Craiglow, Matthew Fouse and Gianna Havey as well as seventh-grader Abrianna Mikel (alternate).

Math teacher Cynthia Shimovetz coaches Blendon’s MathCounts team while math teacher Steven Chandler leads Walnut Springs’ team.

The competition is sponsored by the Franklin County Chapter of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE). The MathCounts program is supported by both middle schools and the Math and Gifted Education departments.

The MathCounts Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides engaging math programs to U.S. middle school students of all ability levels in order to build confidence and improve attitudes towards math and problem-solving.
