MathCounts teams at two Westerville middle schools competed in Feb. 17 regional competition

MathCounts teams at Blendon and Walnut Springs middle schools recently competed at the regional chapter competition on Feb. 17, vying for an opportunity to advance to the state competition. 

The event, which features sprint and target rounds based on speed and accuracy, is sponsored by the Franklin County Chapter of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE).

Students representing Blendon include eighth-graders Ethan Bennett, Ambar Loya-Sotomayor and Isaac Cofie; and seventh-grader Mason Wu. Math teacher Cynthia Shimovetz coaches Blendon’s team.

Students representing Walnut Springs include eighth-graders Kacee Bohan, Ethan Boy (not pictured), Brayden Burgess, Cameron Marsolo, Caeden Mills, Carter Randall, Tyler Thomas, Ian Webster and alternate Vivian Cochrane; and seventh-grader Jacoby Gruber; and sixth-grader Anna McCracken. Math teacher Steven Chandler coaches the team.

The program is supported by both middle schools and the Math and Gifted Education departments. 

The MathCounts Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides engaging math programs to U.S. middle school students of all ability levels in order to build confidence and improve attitudes towards math and problem-solving.
