Avery Long, a sixth-grader at Blendon Middle School, has been invited to compete in a regional spelling competition this spring sponsored by Ohio University School of Business after taking first place in a school-wide competition.
By competing in the regional meet, Long has a chance to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. this summer.
In the Blendon competition, which was online via a new platform from Scripps, sixth-grader William Blazo placed second and eighth-grader Abraham Watkins placed third.
The program is supported by Blendon and the Language Arts and Gifted Education departments.
