MathCounts teams at two Westerville middle schools compete in regional competition Feb. 6

MathCounts teams at Blendon and Walnut Springs middle schools will compete at the regional chapter competition on Feb. 6, vying for an opportunity to advance to the state competition. 

The virtual event, which features sprint and target rounds based on speed and accuracy, is sponsored by the Franklin County Chapter of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE).

Students representing Blendon include eighth-graders Devin Eby and Peyton Householder and seventh-graders Mason Wu and Ethan Bennet. Math teacher Cynthia Shimovetz is their coach.

Students representing Walnut Springs include eighth-graders Myla Manu-Arkhurst, Nate Bell, Adam Kauh, Tyler Schmidt, Jordan Mazak (alternate); seventh-graders James Scarbrough, Tyler Thomas, Ethan Boy, Caeden Mills (alternate); and sixth-graders Sam Clifton, Lincoln Haman, Jacoby Gruber (alternate) and Gianna Harvey (alternate). Math teacher Steven Chandler is their coach.

The program is supported by both middle schools and the Math and Gifted Education departments. 

The MathCounts Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides engaging math programs to U.S. middle school students of all ability levels in order to build confidence and improve attitudes towards math and problem-solving.
