MathCounts Teams from Blendon and Genoa middle schools were among the approximate 500 students and 50 schools participating in the February 5, 2020, Regional Chapter Competition, sponsored by the Franklin County Chapter of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers, at Columbus State Community College.

Representing Blendon were Mason Wu (placed in the top 25% of the competitors), Adin Russ, Caleb Dew, and Peyton Householder. Blendon Math Teacher Cynthia Shimovetz coached the team. Students from Genoa were Andrew Boyd (placed 3rd overall), Andrew Wang (placed 10th overall), Anthony Malek, and Noah Gibson (placed in the top 25% of the competitors). Geona’s team was coached by parent volunteer Pi Pa Lee.

The competition incorporated a sprint round, target round, team round, and countdown round to determine the final 16 competitors. Six schools and 12 individuals advanced to the March 7 state competition at Columbus State Community College. Scheduled state and national MathCounts contests have been impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic. The MathCounts Foundation recently stated on its website that it is actively monitoring the situation and continues to follow the guidance of the CDC, World Health Organization and local and state health officials.

The MathCounts Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides engaging math programs to U.S. middle school students of all ability levels in order to build confidence and improve attitudes towards math and problem solving. Visit https://www.mathcounts.org for more information.
