Last week, most Blendon Middle School 8th graders went on the annual trip to Washington, D.C.  Students who couldn’t make the journey were also treated to a very special week, however, thanks to the efforts of teachers Kelly Blum and Pam Aylor, who worked together to come up with various service and educational activities.

The educators assembled a list of community service projects, special speakers and learning exercises to provide the students in Westerville with a very memorable four days.  One of the community service projects was to read to students at Hawthorne Elementary.  This event was made possible thanks to Hawthorne music teacher Sarah McPeak, who coordinated the effort.  Blendon students also visited the Edgewood Nursing Home to talk with the residents, play board games and plant flowers.  In addition, they cleaned the grounds of Blendon and Westerville South, and made blankets for the My Very Own Blanket organization.  They also listened to various speakers, including a Holocaust survivor, as well as Pat Tiberi, Representative from the State of Ohio.
